IN 1972, NAD (originally an acronym for New Acoustic Dimension) set out to create a new kind of audio company. We were a group of audio-industry veterans: manufacturers, retailers, distributors, and – above all – listeners. We were driven by passion for great sound and by the desire to cut through the marketing hype and over-elaboration that had become pervasive in the audio industry. We wanted to provide what people really wanted instead of what they were being sold.
The audio industry we entered in 1972 had been created by its own customers back in the 1950s. People who wanted something better than mass-market radios and phonographs had searched out public-address equipment and put the cumbersome pieces of it together as best they could. And some of them went into business to make what they were not finding. By the time the "Rock Revolution" of the 1960s occurred, the interest in good equipment had become so obvious that the major players in the electronics industry had moved in to harvest the business that the audio pioneers had created. They brought a lot of expense, complexity, and hyperbole with them. The marketing of audio equipment took on so much "sizzle" that the steak became increasingly hard to find and enjoy.
We wanted to get back to the point — to the reality behind the knobs and the increasingly expensive faceplates. And we are still doing that today with every piece of equipment we design. The real point of all audio equipment for the home is obviously enjoyment — of lifelike, involving sound from music and movies. Some of the fun in buying audio components is deciding (and swapping views on) just how lifelike their sound really is. We take as much pleasure in that as anybody else, but we never lose sight of the central aim of enjoyment. And the three qualities we feel are central to creating it are performance, value, and simplicity.

NAD M5 , remote controlled, CD-SACD player

The NAD M5 player is designed to function as both a surround sound and a two-channel SACD player. It will play back Dolby digital, DTS and MPEG formats. The M5 is a sophisticated design implementing the straight-forward REDBOOK CD technology as well as the more sophisticated SACD play-back system.
The units drive is a Sony transport incorporating separate audio paths for CD and SACD play-back. Both formats operate through the D/A converters (DACs) and NAD's analog output circuitry. Separate digital filters are employed for the SACD and CD signal paths. Specially designed, low output impedance, discrete Class A gain modules assure the integrity of high resolution SACD. The audio output stage derives its feed from a separate linear power supply which utilizes a specially designed C-core transformer, chosen for its low noise floor and excellent regulation. Circuits for mechanical and digital operations have their own, independent, NAD-designed switch mode power supply.
SACD uses a fundamentally different approach to transferring the analog musical waveform into the digital domain for storage on the disc. This SACD player (like some others) transfers the analogue waveform with the Direct Stream Digital (DSD) circuit—a superior approach to digital encoding. The high data rate process reduces quantization errors often noticeable in the PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) system used for traditional (REDBOOK) CDs and DVDs.
The M5 contains circuitry designed to obtain top quality sound from regular CDs and also features an HDCD decoder which extends dynamic range by as much as 6dB (from encoded discs).. The M5 employs professional grade D/A converters with 24 bit, 192kHz resolution for PCM (CD) signals, as well as the aforementioned DSD mode for SACD.
The M5 will also play back CD-R, CD-RW and even MP3 and WMA. However, for my tests I used only REDBOOK CDs and SACD material so I cannot comment on the other formats. In the SACD mode, the M5 provides 5.1 surround sound playback. As well, the player includes extensive bass management for the 5.1 output, allowing the end-user to choose the preferred crossover point with 12dB high and 24dB low pass filters. Configurations can be selected using the front panel controls. When used for video play-back, adjustments can be made with the composite video output when operating the M5's on-screen display. When the player is used for music, the video circuit can be switched off to preserve signal integrity and, thus, provide the best possible sound.

The M56 brings NAD’s penchant for performance to the exciting Blu-ray Disc format. As part of the NAD Masters Series, this new player exhibits a masterful level of industrial design and a remarkably solid build quality that you simply won’t find in other Blu-ray players. Brimming with the latest features like BD Live Network connectivity, the M56 offers a true High Definition source for digital home theatre systems.
This premium Blu-ray player is the perfect signal source for the most sophisticated HD home theatres. With full support for the latest HD audio and video formats, as well as compatibility with your existing DVD and CD collections, the M56 will always deliver the best possible performance.
Blu-ray features include BD Live 2.0, including ample internal memory for downloaded content, fast disc loading (compared to some older players, which can take hours to load a BD), and support for Deep Colour and picture-in-picture.
Sonically, the M56 also offers all the latest high-resolution audio formats, including Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio. DVD video is upscaled to full HD (via HDMI only, though). The back panel shows a full mix of analogue and digital signal management options, including a 7.1 analogue output set for use with older ancillaries, and support for both component video and HDMI 1.3.
Less obvious is the network streaming capability of the M56. The Ethernet port isn't only provided for BD Live purposes, but also allows the player to access and stream content from other sources on a home network. And if Ethernet isn't available, the NAD can achieve the same via its integrated Wi-Fi support.
